About
Kaitian Cong (b.2001 Beijing) is a London-based artist, maker, designer who’s work grounded in material aesthetic and use a range of materials and processes, including textiles, publication and raw materials, currently graduated from Royal College of Arts and holds a BA textiles at Central Saint Martins.
Cong’s practice is focused on highlighting everyday objects that are usually overlooked and exploring our relationships with them. Her works is centered around objects that jump out of definitions, break away from the constraints of the reality, and the dialogue generated though the process between objects and space.
She perceives objects through placement, and also as response. In this process, she transforms her exploration and perception into an intuitive vision, which is expressed by deconstructing and reorganising these objects. In this case, objects and their definitions begin to become flexible, they are no longer framed but can be freely combined and moved like a game and chess.
Cong also focuses on the movement, the trajectory generated when the objects are moved and placed. The form and relationship build by the collision of materials, colours and shapes. She wishes the narrative of the object can be continued in her work, so the original shape and function of the object are retained in the sculpture she made to a certain extent.
She aims to communicate her ways of seeing though the sculpture she made, highlighting and revealing unexpected meanings within the objects and to shift our perspective to new ways of seeing, understanding and perceiving.
